Twenty-One Goals as a Twenty-One Year Old

When I came to the end of my year of not eating dessert, many people asked me what I would do next. Some worried that I would begin gorging on every bit of dessert in a ten mile radius, and others worried that I would continue abstaining from dessert (seriously, some people acted like it would be a bad thing to continue refraining from eating something that I will admit that I am addicted to). I too wondered what I would do for my next challenge. I wanted to do something that pushed me even further than the dessert fast had done, so I decided to complete twenty-one challenges instead of only one.

Why the number twenty-one? It is quite simple. I chose this number because it is how old I am. I thought about the different things that I could do throughout the next year, and then it dawned on me that I could create a set of challenges that is equal to the amount of years that I have been alive. I will share this list with you and then explain why some of them seem so random or pointless.

  1. Go without dessert from October 8, 2015 – May 8, 2016
  2. Run a half-marathon
  3. Don’t shave for two weeks
  4. Do a stringent diet for thirty days
  5. Help someone else complete a goal
  6. Do something that makes me more cultured
  7. See the Pacific Ocean
  8. Stay alone in a hotel room
  9. Write a journal entry for every day as a twenty-one year old
  10. Do something that scares me
  11. Use a weight room twelve separate times within four weeks
  12. Ride a horse
  13. Spend a whole night in my hammock
  14. Travel to visit a friend
  15. Go to a job interview that is not in Ohio or New York
  16. Hike to the top of a mountain
  17. Take a photo that I am proud of
  18. Reconnect with an old friend
  19. Begin learning a language
  20. Use my phone only as a phone for a week
  21. Stop biting my fingernails

Like I mentioned earlier, this list may seem completely absurd to the casual observer, but there is a reason for every single item that I have written. For instance, one like “stay alone in a hotel room” sounds odd to a reader, but to me staying alone in a hotel room signifies that I am an adult and have a place that I am traveling to by myself. That is just one example. I plan on fleshing out each goal in a separate blog post as I complete it throughout this year.

I am not sure what will happen in my life as a twenty-one year old, but I am incredibly excited to see what is down the road. It will be hard to embark on such an ambitious set of challenges, but I am confident that I have the ability to complete each and every item. That is not something that I would have said over a year ago, but I now know that I can set goals and actually reach them. It will be a fun journey, and I cannot wait to share it with you all!

Until next time,

Changes have been made to some of the aforementioned goals, so check out the post that I wrote about which goals were changed and my reasons for making those changes.
